Campus novels are works of fiction taking place in universities and dealing with the lives of students and/or professors. This type of literature developed only during the 20th century. Earlier books about universities are rare because most people did not pursue higher education. And it is a paradox, as most of the famous universities of Europe were founded during the Middle Ages, and the famous American ones as early as the colonial period.
