World Poetry Day is now held annually on March 21. The goal is to share and experience poetry but also to honour languages and understand their specificities, in sounds, rhythms, and meanings. It is a day to focus on rarer languages as well. The enduring theme is Poetry for Peace and Unity.
Though poetry sounds like a strange world to modern audiences used to prose, it was the first form in which stories and plays were written. But we still experience poetry on an everyday basis, without being aware of it when we listen to music and songs!
